Category Yoghismo

Yoghismo (Yogismo / Yoga) is the practical discipline of liberation within Hindu philosophy. If Vedānta answers “Who am I?”, Yoga answers “How do I live and realize it?”

The word Yoga comes from yuj — to yoke, unite, integrate.
Its aim is union of consciousness with its source and freedom from suffering.

The classical definition

From Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras:

“Yogaḥ citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ”
Yoga is the calming of the fluctuations of the mind.

When the mind becomes still, the Seer abides in their own true nature.

The goal of Yogismo

Kaivalya – inner freedom, independence from mental conditioning

Mastery of attention, emotion, and perception

Direct realization of the Self (often aligned with Vedānta)

Yoga is not about flexibility.
It is about clarity, freedom, and inner sovereignty.

The Eightfold Path (Aṣṭāṅga Yoga)

Yama – ethical restraints (non-violence, truth, integrity)

Niyama – inner observances (purity, contentment, discipline)

Āsana – steady, comfortable posture

Prāṇāyāma – regulation of life-force through breath

Pratyāhāra – withdrawal of the senses

Dhāraṇā – concentration

Dhyāna – meditation

Samādhi – absorption; unity of knower, knowing, known

The body prepares the breath.
The breath steadies the mind.
The mind reveals the Self.

Main currents of Yogismo

Rāja Yoga – meditation and mental mastery (Patañjali)

Haṭha Yoga – body as instrument of awakening

Bhakti Yoga – devotion and surrender

Karma Yoga – selfless action

Jñāna Yoga – wisdom and self-inquiry

Tantric Yoga – conscious use of energy (śakti)

Yoga & Vedānta (the key relationship)

Yoga disciplines the mind

Vedānta reveals truth

Together: stable liberation

Without Yoga, Vedānta remains intellectual.
Without Vedānta, Yoga risks becoming mechanical.

Modern misconception (important)

Most modern “yoga” = only Āsana (3rd limb)
Classical Yogismo = whole-life transformation

In one line

Yogismo is the science of mastering yourself so truth can reveal itself.
