Category Vedanta

Vedānta is the philosophical and mystical heart of Hinduism. Literally meaning “the end (or culmination) of the Vedas,” it points to the Upaniṣadic insight that ultimate reality is one—and you are not separate from it.

The central insight

Brahman – infinite, changeless reality

Ātman – the true Self

Mahāvākya (great declaration): Ātman = Brahman

You are not a body having consciousness.
You are consciousness appearing as a body.

The problem Vedānta addresses

Human suffering comes from avidyā (ignorance): mistaking

the temporary for the real

the ego for the Self

appearance (māyā) for truth

Liberation is not attained; it is remembered.

The three main schools
1. Advaita Vedānta (Non-dualism) – Śaṅkara

Reality is one without a second

The world is māyā (appearance, not illusion)

Liberation through self-knowledge (jñāna)

“Brahman alone is real; the world is appearance; the Self is Brahman.”

2. Viśiṣṭādvaita (Qualified non-dualism) – Rāmānuja

Unity with distinction

Soul and world exist in Brahman

Liberation through devotion (bhakti)

3. Dvaita (Dualism) – Madhva

God and soul are eternally distinct

Liberation through grace and devotion

Vedānta practice (how it’s lived)

Śravaṇa – hearing the truth

Manana – reflecting deeply

Nididhyāsana – meditation and assimilation

Primary inquiry:

“Who am I, before thought, before name, before story?”

Key concepts to grasp

Māyā – misperception, not unreality

Neti Neti – “not this, not this” (un-identifying from forms)

Sat-Cit-Ānanda – being, consciousness, bliss (your nature)

Why Vedānta matters today

Anticipates non-dual consciousness studies

Clarifies observer vs observed

Grounds mysticism in reason and experience

Complements meditation, yoga, and contemplative science

In one sentence

Vedānta is the art of awakening to what you already are.
